A Trip Down Memory Lane, will take you back in time through the history of Buchanan County when the town of Grundy was only a dream in the mind of the seventy-eight residents living there. The journey will take you through the organization of Buchanan County on February 13, 1858, and the incorporation of Grundy the county seat on March 29, 1876, to the discovery of the great wealth of resources hidden beneath the earth in the form of coal. It would later earn the name of Black Gold as mines began to open and many of the coal operators became millionaires.
The mountains were covered with virgin timber which led to the need for a lumber company. Ritter Lumber Company along with others opened for business, creating jobs for the local men and bringing in others from surrounding counties. The need for a way to transport coal led to the first railroad.
As you travel with the Davis family through the dark days of the depression you will meet many of the local people including doctors, lawyers, ministers, teachers and shop keepers. You will meet with family, friends and neighbors, learn about the struggles, and disappointments they faced and how they overcame them. Neighbors and friends shared what they had with each other bringing them closer as a community.
